VSO is the world’s leading independent international development organisation that works through volunteers to fight poverty in developing countries.
VSO’s high-impact approach involves bringing people together to share skills, build capabilities, promote international understanding and action, and change lives to make the world a fairer place for all.
On average it costs £25,000 a year to train and send a volunteer overseas, so my fundraising is a small contribution towards sending other professionals like myself. The money will not go to my placement but to the organisation in order to fund future placements in 44 of the world’s poorest countries. For example, £900 can help VSO keep a nurse in Sierre Leone for 6 months, educating local health workers and communities to combat malnutrition, malaria and dysentery. In Nepal it can support a teacher trainer establish access to good education for the poorest children. For my contribution, I want to raise £1,000.00. As of early October 2011 I am just over halfway there.
